Overview

House Waystone is a merchant family based in Emberton, Oerendia, with broader commercial operations through the firm Barrickea Gem and Mineral. The Waystones are one of the two named ancient bloodlines in the record whose genetic heritage produces a concentrated latent magical potential — the result of centuries of relative isolation preserving a density of Lady Ananke's latent magical seed far above the world average.

This is Narrator Knowledge. No character in the world knows the genetic mechanics behind the family's consistent magical output. In-world, it is attributed to divine favour by those who notice it at all.

The Bloodline

When the Waystone line has crossed with other sufficiently concentrated bloodlines — most notably the Rimbaud line — the coalesced potential has produced individuals with extraordinary magical capacity. The crossing of these two lines in the generation of Laeala Waystone (née Rimbaud) and Hector Waystone produced Solomon Waystone, whose latent potential has been perceived by multiple experienced magic users as being of an extraordinary and perhaps unprecedented order.

The Waystone line is one of only two named examples of coalesced magical bloodline potential currently in the record. The other is the Rimbaud family.

Known Members

Hector Waystone

Father of Solomon Waystone and Melisande Waystone. A respected gem merchant and partner in Barrickea Gem and Mineral, based in Emberton. Described as broad, steady, and patient — a man of practical intelligence and genuine warmth. He considered Solomon destined for the gem trade rather than soldiery, recognising his son's intellectual promise. He disowned his brother Sebastian Waystone after the Brunswick affair and assumed the full weight of a substantial debt rather than accept a dishonest outcome. He fled Toth Safira with his family by night. Presumed dead — wreckage of the ship Nina was found along his route; a dark northern vessel was sighted in the same waters.

Laeala Waystone (née Rimbaud)

Mother of Solomon Waystone and Melisande Waystone. Daughter of the Rimbaud family of Niallis. Her brother is Steadig; her surviving family includes aunt Willow Rimbaud of the Olympic Order. Solomon kept her silver-and-bronze comb — Oerendine in design, modified with rose-bronze Embertonian filigree, her hair still caught in its teeth — as his token of her. Presumed dead with Hector aboard the Nina.

Melisande Waystone

Younger sister of Solomon Waystone. Solomon kept her carved wooden camel — shaped from Qathari bush wood, one ear chipped, the legs uneven, worn smooth where her hands had held it — as his token of her. Presumed dead with her parents aboard the Nina.

Solomon Waystone

Son of Hector and Laeala. Heir to the Waystone share of Barrickea Gem and Mineral. One of the two primary protagonists of the fourth iteration. See Solomon Waystone for full entry.

Hemetia Waystone

Grandmother. Matriarch of the Waystone gem empire in Toth Safira. Collapsed under the weight of the news of her son's presumed death. Her relationship with Sebastian Waystone following the Brunswick affair is not established in the record.

Sebastian Waystone

Uncle of Solomon. Based in Toth Safira. Made a secret accord with the Brunswick family intending to force Barrickea Gem and Mineral into bankruptcy so the firm could be restructured as an end-merchant enterprise — a long-held personal ambition. He hired mercenaries to stage a loss on the caravan, not a slaughter. When the killing began, the situation exceeded his control. Confronted, he called his actions "necessary business." Disowned by Hector. Declared dead to Solomon, who told him so directly. Sebastian subsequently warned Solomon that it would be in his best interest to abandon the Toth Safira location entirely, and admitted to having sold shares to the Brunswick family under terms requiring full control of the company.

Places

  • Emberton — Primary family seat. The Waystone family home is here. Solomon inherited it after the presumed death of his parents.
  • Toth Safira — Location of the Waystone gem empire headquarters under Hemetia Waystone. Sebastian Waystone operates here. Solomon visited and left; his departure was hostile.

The Firm: Barrickea Gem and Mineral

The Waystone family hold a significant share in Barrickea Gem and Mineral, a gem merchant and trading firm operating across multiple nations. Following the deaths of Hector and Laeala, control of the Waystone share fell to Solomon, though the inheritance of shares had not been formally resolved at the time of his return to Emberton. Sebastian Waystone had sold shares to the Brunswick family under terms requiring full control. The full corporate picture — and the hidden accounts Solomon discovered but could not access — remains unresolved in the record.

Count Lucius Malgrave offered to hold the company in provisional county trust. Solomon declined in favour of a different arrangement — studying under Malgrave as a statesman — leaving the company's formal governance in a transitional state.

Ideas

The Waystone family name carries no magical reputation in the world at large. Their output of individuals with exceptional potential is noticed by those with the ability to perceive it — and quietly discussed among senior magic users — but the family itself has no institutional magical standing. They are gem merchants. The magic, if it comes, will surprise those outside the orders more than those within them.
